Does Religion Make Black Folks Stupid?
AS ALWAYS YOU'VE BEEN WARNED
------ Part VI- Religion
As always the talented E. Private posted a Blog yesterday that challenged us to think: http://blackinamerica.com/cgi-bin/blog.cgi... As a result, folks were blowing me on email.

"Dr. Glover, I just got through reading some of your responses to the "Blacks and Homos*xuality" blog. I agree with your position that people must research and understand the bible for themselves. God blessed us with a mind of our to think with for that very purpose, I believe. So many people have had hands in writing the bible (Old and New Testament) along with "revisions" down through the ages. Not to mention the numerous translations (gives creedence to the saying "lost in translation"). How can we not try to understand the bible for ourselves? I have been rebuffed for this position by those who would say, "God, the omnipotent being, wouldn't let his word be corrupted." I try to remind them that pieces of the bible are missing and that it has been historically proven that passages in the bible have been changed by kings and high ranking clergyman for their own purposes. I am dismissed as less than faithful. Its not God that I lack faith in, its the intentions of people. I believe everyone must find their own truth in the word by maintaining a personal relationship with God. Anyways, that's my two cents and I applaud your willingness to take on the subject"

This has inspired me to write this gut check!
Okay, this is an argument in the making. But healthy debate on this topic is needed for growth…
Over the past few weeks I’ve seen tons of Blogs and Posts where people, my people, use their version of religion to justify behaviors, feelings, discrimination, or treatment of other folks who are different than themselves. The issue for me is not faith, but knowledge.
Black folks will spare no expense to know everything there is to know about the Bahamas before we take a 7-day cruise. We’ll read everything ever written about Beyonce Knowles-Carter…and can quote her shoe size. Heck, we can tell you the date Michael Vick started elementary school. But we haven’t read the book (your specific religious flavor) that we claim guides our life: Torah, Koran, Bible, Vedas, Mormon, Avesta , Sahib, Scientology, you name it.
Why do we claim to love GOD, but refuse to read his messages in their entirety?
Or worse, why do we claim to love or hate others based on the limited stuff we’ve read in our book?
Or my favorites:
Why do we quote stuff from our book without any knowledge of the context of who wrote it, when it was written, who it was written to, or WHY it was written in the first place?
Why do we quote stuff that we heard (NOT READ) based on someone else’s interpret from our book?
Why do we believe part of our book, but try to change the meaning of other stuff (or act like…”that’s not what that says”) in our books?
Being allowed to be an expert on religion without a holistic knowledge of our faith is dangerous! Quoting stuff from our books without having read and studied the context…is one of the most destructive things in our Black in America experience. We apply things wrong, we make judgments that are flawed, and we spew hate when thought we were showing love.
As well, we transfer this misguided logic to other parts of our lives. We become self-certified experts of anything we wish…and refuse to seek help or change our closed minded view of the world!
Now I don’t want to challenge your faith, or ask you to change your concept of the afterlife. I am begging you however to know your religion. If you are going to use your religion as your guide…read what it says…every single word. Study its history…past-up-till-now! Then enter into faith-based debates.
Would you argue medicine without understand all the variables? Would you debate how to fly…without reading a single book on flying?
Know about the people who created the versions or messages that you follow. Understand why they did or didn’t include things that effect your belief.
And if you happen to have time, learn about the rest of the globe. As such a small part of the world…we do ourselves an injustice by not knowing what others think, feel, and believe.
STATS: There are ~ 6,716,519,735 in the world. More than 6,416,519,73…LIVE SOMEWHERE OTHER THAN THE USA!!! Well over 6,666,519,735 are not African-American.
So what are your views?
Is a little bit of religion enough to be considered an expert?
Do you need to read the whole book to follow or quote it?
Do you need to understand the context of the words to believe and follow them?
Is blind faith better than no faith at all?
Who cares who wrote the stuff…just believe…right?
