Dr. Busdiecker Receives $30K Grant to Study Social Justice Activism in Chile (6029 hits)

A grant from the Reed Foundation Ruth Landes Memorial Research Fund is allowing Sara Busdiecker, Ph.D., assistant professor of international studies, to study the socio-political impacts of Afro-descendant organizations founded in Chile since 2000. The $30,000 grant supports her project, “Afro-Chilean Activisms: (Re) Claiming Ancestry and (Re) Asserting Belonging at the Borders of Nation and Diaspora.” “The efforts of these organizations to gain legal recognition and greater inclusion contribute to reversing the longstanding invisibility of the Afro-Chilean population,” said Dr. Busdiecker. “This research helps contribute to Spelman’s global engagement and sheds light on what activism and social justice look like elsewhere in the Americas.”

Dr. Busdiecker is spending the 2018-2019 academic year abroad in Chile, while working on another project, “Intimate Transformation: (Re) Negotiating Race in South Africa’s Shifting Post-Apartheid Kinscape,” which is slated to be completed in spring 2019 and is supported by the UNCF/Mellon Faculty Residency Program Fellowship.
