SAVANNAH — Ten Savannah State University (SSU) students were recently awarded the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, which will cover nearly 100 percent of the costs for them to study abroad this summer.
SSU had more students selected to receive the Gilman scholarship than any other college or university in the state of Georgia. The recipients will use their award money to study in five different destinations — Concetta Dotson and Jacquelyn Pressley will travel to Costa Rica; Jeremy Wallace will travel to China; Inessa Bredeson, Diamonyese Brunson, Joshua Joseph, Myles Lamar and Dominique Perry-Edwards will travel to both China and India; Raven Hughey will travel to Trinidad and Tobago; and Blessing Enya will travel to Vietnam.
The Academic Opportunity Act of 2000 established the Gilman scholarship, which allows undergraduates across the country who receive federal Pell Grant funding to participate in study abroad programs worldwide with cost exemption. Students are selected through a competitive application process that includes submitting transcripts and writing two essays. More than 2,300 scholarships of up to $5,000 each are awarded, with the amount varying according to the student’s needs and length of stay.
