Today on The Black Scholars Index... (1033 hits)

Today, The Black Scholars Index features Barbara Jordan. She was the first African American woman elected to Congress from Texas, the first African American woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from the South, and the first African American to give a keynote speech at a Democratic National Convention.

Portions of her speech have the same tone of President Obama's 1st State of the Union Address. Watch the clip!

Barbara Jordan is a woman I admired due to her courage and straight forwardness. Shirley Chisholm and she were fearless when it came to doing what they believed most needed to be done for those that they and their efforts represented. In some ways (and I'm not sure why) Barbara Jordan puts me in mind of Maya Angelou. Both are powerful speakers -- that's for sure!

Thanks for the post.
