March 12, 2019 - Grammercy Park

From his first single, "I Sit On Acid", released in 1988, to the present, Belgium's Praga Khan remains one of the most innovative acid house musicians in circulation. Now, despite numerous lineup changes, world tours, over 2.5 million album sales, and every possible point of crisis and conflict a band can face, Lords of Acid is returning to the unsuspecting again, this time with a new crew of deviants, dilettantes, and sonically transmitted diseases. All of that hang-time paid off with his 1998 recording The Challenge on Arabesque Records. Penning six of the compositions, selecting an inspired posse of young ringers (Ron Blake, tenor sax; Stephen Scott, piano; Dwayne Burno, bass; Dion Parsons, drums), Robinson also produced the whole shebang. Puzzling: The Puzzle Without An Answer - Anthology Film Archives
March 12, 2019 - New York

A puzzle is something puzzling– it expects deduction and solution, while at the same time describes a condition of open confusion. The six-part series "Puzzling" considers these concurrent modes to explore different registers of knowing, the generative possibilities of uncertainty, and the film form as a choreography of sense and stimuli. How can a puzzle, as a challenge and as a structure, destabilize or shape the world? How are the boundaries of sense and non-sense policed? Human and non-human test subjects, compromised figures of authority, and metaphysical detectives populate the series, alongside inquiries on communication, abstraction, and agency.

Speak Torah to Power - Symphony Space
March 13, 2019 - Manhattan

Speak Torah to Power: "Creating New Narratives of Empathy" with Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum: In this powerful, engaging talk, Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum will tell the story of how it became an essential part of Muslim prayer in one community to be surrounded by the love of gay Jews, and how one straight Imam found himself as a featured speaker at New York's GLBT Pride parade. It's a story of being present and bearing deep witness, about knowing that we can't always change the world, about what it takes to look empathetically into the experience of another and to show up in acts of love and solidarity. It's about knowing that when we sit with each other in pain, we can strengthen and be strengthened, we can transform and be transformed–and we can learn how to live out our awareness that each person is created in God's image.

Muna Tseng, Alvin Eng, Karoline Kan, and Angel Yau will each present from their oeuvre varying from a reading, spoken word, video and music – dedicated to the theme of the evening: NüVoices of the Diaspora. As part of the evening we invite the audience to bring along their own poems or brief excerpts of writing, old or new, fiction or non-fiction, to share in the last half hour of the program. Revolving around a 1946 class action lawsuit by 5 Mexican-American families to have their children enrolled in Orange County, CA public schools by applying the 14th Amendment, XIV serves as a creative counterpoint to the current events surrounding the realities of undocumented 'dreamers' and the vitriolic calls for building a Wall. Her debut novel intertwines the two timelines of postwar Paris and the current day as a young woman seeks answers when she finds an old picture of her father, a U.S. Army private, with two women and a small boy in Paris after the war. Wishing to learn more about her father, she travels to Paris to try to find this young boy. Combining history, romance, and mystery, The Paris Photo reveals how wartime trauma can persist into the present. Admission to the book talk is free, but reservations are required. Please arrive early and have photo ID available. This event is sponsored by The JTS Library. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dr. Jane S. Gabin holds a PhD in English Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has continued her career as an educational counselor and lecturer. Revelry: Arun Ramamurthy Trio - Symphony Space
March 14, 2019 - Manhattan

Join us every Thursday evening for a festive night of live music, drink specials, and easy-going REVELRY. Arun Ramamurthy Trio(ART) brings a fresh approach to age-old South Indian classical repertoire. The trio's collaborative sound is driven by the propulsive rhythm section of drummer Sameer Gupta & and bassist Perry Wortman. The Carnatic canon is remixed in this seamless integration of styles as the group expands on the traditional compositions in explosive, improvisational flights of fancy. Arun's original work pays homage to Carnatic rhythmic structures and rich tonalities while expanding the music with a modern jazz backbeat by staying true to raga, the modes which form the melodic foundation for Indian classical composition, but finding the full sonic identity of a skilled ensemble, Ramamurthy's trio discovers new common ground and moments of organic conversation between two traditions, both based on a balance of rigor and freedom. Joined often by guest artists, ART's improvisational and fluid base takes new shape as an ensemble speaking varying dialects. Selected by NPR's New Sounds as a Top New Release and listed as a Best Release of 2014 by All About Jazz' Dan McClenegh... (read more)

Voice of My City: Jerome Robbins and New York - Lincoln Center
Through March 16, 2019 - New York

Jerome Robbins was an inveterate observer, seeker, and creator. In diaries, drawings, watercolors, paintings, story scenarios, poems—and, especially, in dance—he reimagined the world around him. And New York dominated that world, where he was born one-hundred years ago and where he lived his entire adult life. Ideas of New York have long inspired artists but often the city serves as a backdrop in an artwork rather than the basis for plot, theme, and meaning. Robbins put the city at the center of his artistic imaginings. From Fancy Free—his breakout hit ballet in 1944—to the musical West Side Story on stage (1957) and screen (1961) and the ballets N.Y. Export: Opus Jazz (1958) and Glass Pieces (1983), Robbins explored the joys, struggles, grooves, routines, and aspirations of New York. And in recreating the city around him on stage, Robbins found a place for himself. Voice of My City traces Robbins' life and dances alongside the history of New York, inspiring viewers to see the city as both a muse and a home.

Grant Stewart Quartet - Smalls Jazz Club
March 17, 2019 - New York

Born in Toronto, Canada on June 4, 1971, Grant Stewart was exposed to the music of Charlie Parker, Wardell Gray and Coleman Hawkins by his father, a high-school English teacher and semiprofessional guitarist. Father and son often played together for hours on end. It was through these early experiences and his father's encouragement that Stewart first developed a strong ear for melody, style, and improvisation. He began with the alto saxophone at age 10, and when he was 14 his first teacher, noted Toronto bandleader Pete Schofield, invited him to play professionally in Schofield's Big Band. At 17 he switched to the tenor saxophone and was soon playing with such master saxophonists as Pat Labarbara and Bob Mover. Stewart considers Mover to be one of his greatest teachers and among his strongest influences along with Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Don Byas, and Lester Young. Since moving to New York City at the age of 19, Stewart has studied with such masters as Donald Byrd, Barry Harris, and Joe Lovano, and performed with Curtis Fuller, John Hendricks, Clark Terry, Etta Jones, Bill Charlap, Frank Gant, Dan Barret, Bob Mover, Brad Mehldau, Russell Malone, Larry Goldings, Peter Bernstei... Jon Beshay Quartet - Smalls Jazz Club
March 17, 2019 - New York

"I play music because I like to listen to music, and when I'm playing I'm in charge of what I'm hearing." Jonathan Beshay-jazz saxophonist, bandleader, and composer-says that there's no other agenda when his group takes the bandstand. Fortunately for audiences, Beshay likes to hear good music. His first role models were the old masters of jazz (John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, and Lester Young) but it would be a mistake to assume that modern music isn't fair game for Beshay. Artists such as Walter Smith and John Ellis make their way onto his list of influences, all uttered in the same breath as Coleman Hawkins and Woody Shaw. When pressed, he compares his musical process to the late Mulgrew Miller's; something that is rooted deep down in the history of jazz, but has blossomed outward into an art that is unique and new.

Frog & Peach Theatre Company presents their streamlined take on Shakespeare’s celebrated comedy, TWELFTH NIGHT. Now in their 20th year, Frog & Peach creates fast-paced and entertaining productions of Shakespeare's plays that appeal to all audiences, with a special outreach to those who may feel shut out or priced out of the cultural conversation. Set in the seaside kingdom of Illyria, this startlingly modern romp is replete with fiendish pranks, public brawls, and an original rocking score by the band Honey West’s Ted Zurkowski. The production will play a limited engagement from Friday, February 22nd through Sunday, March 17th at The Sheen Center (18 Bleecker Street in NYC). Frog & Peach apply their quick wit and swift cinematic pace to another hilarious evening with the Bard that’s accessible, entertaining, and over before you know it. Co-founder and Artistic Director Lynnea Benson directs. Tickets are $24.95-$29.95 and can be purchased... (read more)

ColorStruck - Theatre for the New City
Through March 17, 2019 - New York

NEW YORK, January 28 -- From February 28 to March 17, Theater for the New City, 155 First Ave. will present comedian/actor/broadcaster Donald E. Lacy Jr. in the New York debut of his one man show, "ColorStruck." The play was born in California's Bay Area and has been presented on college campuses around the country and at the National Black Theatre Festival. It was performed twice for the U.S. Congressional Black Caucus. The piece begins as a comedic autobiography of a sensitive, light-skinned African American man growing up in Oakland during the height of the Black Pride movement. It recounts how, as a child, Lacy was shunned by some people in the black community for not being dark enough and ostracized by some members in the white community for being too dark. It develops into an examination of how cultural assumptions underlie institutionalized racism and how they make us judge people by the color of their skin and not the content of their character. Director is Sean San Jose; soundscape and music are by Grammy nominee Tommy Soulati Shepherd. Born light-skinned to a dark-skinned African-American family in 1960s Oakland, Donald E. Lacy, Jr. was taunted by other boys as a half ... (read more)
