Job Description
Faculty Cluster Hire in Environmental Health Disparities Research
Launched in August 2020, the UCI Black Thriving Initiative (BTI) is the University of California, Irvineís university-wide response to systemic racism. The BTI recognizes racism as an existential threat to the mission of the university and society at large. It mobilizes the entire campus to change the culture, harness the mission and engage communities to build a university where Black people thrive, including undergraduates and graduate students, faculty, and staff employees as well as alumni and communities served by UCI in California, the United States and around the world. For more information about the UCI Black Thriving Initiative, please visit https://inclusion.uci.edu/uci-black-thriving-initiative/.

Building on UCI's enduring commitment to inclusive excellence, the BTI faculty cluster hire program leverages the University's research, teaching, and service mission to advance understanding about the multi-faceted nature of the Black experience and the drivers of well-being in support of Black communities. To this end, each faculty cluster will receive a $150,000 augmentation award for programs that aligns with BTI.

This call for applications focuses on an Environmental Health Disparities faculty cluster to foster multidisciplinary collaborations that seek to understand and address the ways in which environmental stress and racism contribute to health disparities in Black communities. The cluster includes the Program in Public Health, the Henry Samueli School of Engineering, the School of Social Sciences, and the School of Medicine. The objective of this cluster is to build on existing UCI strengths focused on underserved populations and advance inclusive excellence at UCI by recruiting a diverse faculty focused on environmental health disparities as a form of anti-blackness that shapes the daily lives of Black people as well as the health and welfare of entire communities.

In Southern California, we see extreme environmental health disparities in Black communities, including those living near the Los Angeles International Airport and the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. The Black Thriving Initiative Faculty Cluster Hiring Program provides an opportunity to recruit faculty who can contribute to advancing research, teaching, and service as well as the development of a Center for Environmental Health Disparities Research (https://sites.uci.edu/cehdr/) that will benefit communities with lived Black experiences of environmental injustice. As part of this campus-wide initiative to hire leading research faculty with a strong commitment to teaching, research, and service that will promote the success of the Black community, UCI announces the following positions:
